An Algorithm For Photometric Identification Of Transiting Circumbinary Planets

چکیده

Transiting planets manifest themselves by a periodic dimming of their host star by a fixed amount. On the other hand, light curves of transiting circumbinary (CB) planets are expected to be neither periodic nor to have a single depth while in transit. These propertied make the popular transit finding algorithm BLS almost ineffective so a modified version of BLS for the identification of CB planets was developed CB-BLS. We show that using this algorithm it is possible to find CB planets in the residuals of light curves of eclipsing binaries that have noise levels of 1% and more quality that is routinely achieved by current ground-based transit surveys. Previous searches for CB planets using variation of eclipse times minima of CM Dra and elsewhere are more closely related to radial velocity than to transit searches and so are quite distinct from CB-BLS. Detecting CB planets is expected to have significant impact on our understanding of exoplanets in general, and exoplanet formation in particular. Using CB-BLS will allow to easily harness the massive groundand spacebased photometric surveys in operation to look for these hard-to-find objects.

Searching For Transiting Circumbinary Planets in CoRoT ? and Ground-Based Data Using CB-BLS

Aims. Already from the initial discoveries of extrasolar planets it was apparent that their population and environments are far more diverse than initially postulated. Discovering circumbinary (CB) planets will have many implications, and in this context it will again substantially diversify the environments that produce and sustain planets. We search for transiting CB planets around eclipsing ...

Ground-Based Photometric Searches for Transiting Planets

This paper reviews the basic technical characteristics of the ground-based photometric searches for transiting planets, and discusses a possible observational selection effect. I suggest that additional photometric observations of the already observed fields might discover new transiting planets with periods around 4–6 days. The set of known transiting planets support the intriguing correlation...

Photometric Searches for Transiting Planets: Results and Challenges

Ground-based photometric surveys have led to the discovery of six transiting exoplanets, five of which were detected by the OGLE surveys. The FLAMES multi-object spectrograph on the VLT has permitted a very efficient follow-up of the OGLE transit candidates, characterising not only the 5 planets but also more than 50 systems producing similar photometric signatures – mainly eclipsing binaires. ...

Characterizing the Orbital Eccentricities of Transiting Extrasolar Planets with Photometric Observations

The discovery of over 200 extrasolar planets with the radial velocity (RV) technique has revealed that many giant planets have large eccentricities, in striking contrast with most of the planets in the solar system and prior theories of planet formation. The realization that many giant planets have large eccentricities raises a fundamental question: “Do terrestrial-size planets of other stars t...

High resolution spectroscopy of stars with transiting planets ⋆

Context. During the past years photometric surveys, later complemented by follow-up radial-velocity measurements, have revealed the presence of several new extra-solar transiting planets, in very short period orbits. Many of the host stars are extremely faint (V∼16), making high-precision spectroscopic measurements challenging. Aims. We have used the UVES spectrograph (VLT-UT2 telescope) to obt...
